Abstract
Curious Artefacts was curated by artist Becky Campbell and involves the participation of over 70 artists, architects, designers, musicians and writers. In September 2015 there will be an exhibition of the gathered artefacts at ArtWall in Athens. The project involves talks, walks through the city and other interactive events as well as an on-line platform for archiving the artefacts and a book detailing and cataloguing all the artefacts.
The starting point for the idea was an image of finds from the Antikithera Shipwreck exhibition held at The National Archaeological Museum in Athens. A number of objects excavated from the seabed have been dried and taken to land. A table has been pushed against the wall and paper has been pinned to the wall and over the table to provide a plain backdrop for the objects to be brought together on. These artefacts are suspended between two states: they have been recognised as of interest and curiosity but are not yet fully understood.
Artefacts entering the project include: experiments, finished works, found images, found objects, maquettes, notebooks, notes, photographs, photocopies, sketches, works-in-progress and writing. At ArtWall the artefacts will be arranged densely on tables and the wall of the space, referencing the excavation and collecting from an archaeological dig or the layout of objects at flea-markets as well as a cabinet of curiosities.
