Abstract

Inflammatory and infectious neurologic conditions are an important group of diseases that can affect the nervous system, causing an inflammatory reaction in these tissues.

The presentation and clinical signs are variable, and the final diagnosis can be challenging, since histopathology is needed. Advanced imaging techniques provide essential structural information about the nervous system in a minimally invasive way. These findings, together with the clinical presentation, physical and neurological examination, and other complementary tests like cerebrospinal fluid analysis, are usually the basis for the presumptive diagnosis of these conditions.

The goal of this review is to summarise the diagnostic imaging characteristics of the most relevant inflammatory conditions and the most common infectious diseases in small animals in Spain.
