Abstract / Description of output
This article discusses German translations by Hermann Adler (1951) and Wolf Biermann (1994) of Yitzhak Katzenelson's Yiddish narrative poem about the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising, Dos lid funm oysgehargetn yidishn folk (The Song of the Exterminated Jewish People, written 1944). It explores the difficulties of translating the victim's viewpoint into the ‘language of the perpetrators’ and the way that these two German Jewish writers have conceptualized the relationship between Yiddish and German, showing that they have both used Katzenelson's text in order to perform interventions in the discussion of victim—perpetrator reconciliation.
