Abstract / Description of output
This edited collection brings together 12 essays by international specialists in Classical Antiquity, and provides a general and a period-specific introduction to distributed cognition and the cognitive humanities. This book revitalises our reading of Classical works in the fields of history of technology, science and medicine, material culture, philosophy and literary studies by bringing to bear recent insights in cognitive science and philosophy of mind on the ways in which cognition is distributed across brain, body and world. As many of the texts and practices discussed here have influenced Western European society and culture, this book reveals the historical foundations of our theoretical and practical attempts to comprehend and optimise the distributed nature of human cognition.
