Abstract
The use of simulation in the study of past human societies encompasses over 4 decades of diverse experiences. However, unlike other techniques such as Geographic Information Systems the impact of simulation in the discipline has only affected a small community of experts.
This scenario has radically changed over the last years. Several works and projects have successfully integrated simulation as an essential tool for data analysis and hypothesis testing. This recent popularity is caused by several factors, including new easy-to-use tools, the access to higher computational resources or the emergence of simulation methods specifically tailored to model social dynamics.
The aim of this work is to examine the role played by simulation within the field of computational archaeology. Past and present uses are explored as well as current challenges and future perspectives.
