Abstract

This chapter discusses the structural and thermal design of direct drive generators and how these generators can be in integrated into a wind turbine. The forces at play in these large electrical machines are described and the modelling approaches are discussed. The chapter introduces alternative design approaches to structural and thermal challenges in direct drive generators.
