Abstract
Developing out of the cluster and innovation systems literature, entrepreneurial ecosystems have been so far seen in the literature as largely monolithic forces that influence all entrepreneurs within them in similar ways. Little has been said about how entrepreneurs engage with their local entrepreneurial ecosystem, draw resources and support from it, and how this affects their ability to innovate and grow. Using on practice-based approaches to economic geography, this paper addresses this gap. Interviews were conducted with high-growth technology entrepreneurs in Edinburgh and Glasgow, Scotland. These interviews shed light on the heterogeneous practices entrepreneurs use within their ecosystems and the relationships between these practices and the evolutionary cultural and economic structures of their local economies. Initial results show strong differences in practices both within and between the two cities. Entrepreneurs' practices are related to their stage of firm development, industry, and their individual background as well as the cultural norms of their cities. From the data it is possible to see that high-growth entrepreneurs take a nuanced and strategic approach to their engagement with their local entrepreneurial ecosystem and are keenly aware of the resources that are available as well as the burdens and challenges that go along with participating in the startup community.
