Abstract / Description of output

People with epilepsy often present with comorbid endocrine disorders. Such conditions may affect the clinical manifestations and influence the management of epilepsy. The therapies used in epilepsy can also disrupt endocrine homeostasis and lead to glycemic and hormonal changes with important clinical consequences. Knowing how to recognize and handle these issues can help health care professionals working with people with epilepsy provide optimal care for their patients. In this chapter, selected endocrine disorders and hormone abnormalities will be discussed with an emphasis on their descriptive epidemiology, pathophysiology, diagnosis, and management. These conditions include diabetes mellitus, thyroid disease, prolactin abnormalities, and sex steroid hormone fluctuations.
