Pathways to Impact Award 2010 – the 2013 Update Report

Updates on the Pathways to Impact 2010 awards are as follows:
1. Support for the Initiating Knowledge Transfer Fund (IKTF):
(i) Trellis Coded Spatial Modulation (Professor Harald Haas) - there is one additional IEEE transactions paper which can be partially attributed to this funding by D. Tsonev, S. Sinanović and H. Haas entitled ‘Complete Modeling of Nonlinear Distortion in OFDM-based Optical Wireless Communication’, accepted by the Journal of Lightwave Technology.
(ii) In Situ Redox Sensor for Continuous Monitoring of Microbial Activity in Aquatic Sediments (Professor DK Arvind) - subsequent to the completion of the project, a further sensor device based on that developed during the project was installed at Loch Leven in Perthshire.
(iii) Reductive Isotopic Di-Ethylation (RIDE) as a tool to quantify peptides in a sample by LC-MS (Dr Thierry Le Bihan) - the requested fund was for the commercialisation of a new quantitative labelling strategy developed for proteomic application. The generated data was used to build a business case and was presented to the Edinburgh BioQuarter, where in 2011 a third place win in BioQuarter’ s competition was secured, which allowed deeper exploration of the commercialisation of this method. Moreover, discussions of possible collaborations with the first and second position winners of the 2011 BioQuarter competition are on-going for a potential joint project. A 2013 summer SULSA studentship is now in progress (combining quantitative proteomic with cell shape profiling) with Cytomos. A publication was also accepted entitled ‘The use of a novel quantitation strategy based on Reductive Isotopic Di-Ethylation (RIDE) to evaluate the effect of glufosinate on the unicellular algae Ostreococcus tauri’ by Barrios-Llerena M.E, Pritchard J.C, Kerr L.E, Le Bihan T. in the Journal of Proteomics, 18 November 2011; 74 (12): 2798-809. DOI: 10.1016/j.jprot.2011.06.014. This work was presented by M.E Barrios-Llerena at the eighth BSPR-EBI 2011 meeting ‘From the Visible to the Hidden Proteome’, Cambridge (UK), where it was short-listed for an Early Stage Career Investigator Award.
(iv) A Modular Physical Audio Effect Environment (Dr Stefan Bilbao) - a subsequent ERC Starting Grant (StG-2011-279068-NESS) valued at 1.5 million Euro has been secured.
2. Making Connections (Dr Colin Adams) - no updates for this project.
3. Strategic Corporate Engagement and Relationship Management (Professor Polly Arnold) - no updates for this project.
4. Adsorption Research Industrial Consortium (Professor Stefano Brandani) - the Adsorption Research Industrial Consortium has held four CPD courses to facilitate knowledge transfer since the last project update.
5. Marketing and Promotion of Low Carbon Economy and Marine Energy Themes (Dr John Jeffrey) - no updates for this project.
6. International Centre for Digital Sciences (Dr Anna Kenway) - no updates for this project.
7. Science Writer Funding (Dr Anna Kenway) - no updates for this project.
