Abstract
Postweaning multisystemic wasting syndrome was diagnosed in one out of 78 investigated Austrian farms. Nine animals were found to be PMWS positive. Clinical signs were wasting and dyspnoe with a mortality rate of 10 to 15%. The animals showed histomorphologic changes characteristic for PMWS, such as lymphadenitis, interstitial pneumonia, nephritis and hepatitis. Porcine circovirus type 2 infections were confirmed by PCR and in situ hybridisation. Aggregates of nonenveloped, icosaedral virions could be shown in the inclusionbodies by electron microscopy.
