Abstract / Description of output

Numerous variables that contribute to predicting academic performance stand out in the literature. In this sense, parental support considered an early distal cause of it. However, there are contradictory results regarding its contribution, due to the different ways of operationalizing said construct. The objective of the reported work consisted of continuing the adaptation studies of the Parental Support Scale, initiated by Aparicio and Cupani (2008). Specifically, evidence of internal structure was obtained and the explanatory contribution made by parental support in the academic performance of students was explored, considering the type of institution they attend (public or private) and the socioeconomic level of their parents. The results indicate that the original four-factor structure of the Parental Support Scale was replicated (Sehee & Hsiu-Zu, 2005). The internal consistency study indicated acceptable values for three of the four theoretically defined scales. Both in public and private educational institutions it was observed that the perception of parental support increases when the performance of the students is low. In particular, the educational aspiration of parents and the supervision they carry out on their children contributed to explain the academic performance of students, in public and private schools, respectively. Regarding the socioeconomic level, the families of medium-high level participate more actively in the education of their children. The results are discussed.
