Abstract
Festivals reveal tensions in authenticity evaluations: High arts music festivals, defined by their location and cultural content, illustrate how audiences negotiate values of nationalism and globalism. Local audiences and critics may diverge in their authenticity judgments depending on how festivals balance national culture and international elite performances.
