Abstract / Description of output

This chapter sets out the significance of the legal concept of the family in Roman law. More specifically, it demonstrates how the legal relationships between family members operated against the backdrop of a peculiarly Roman conception of the family. It is argued that more attention should be paid to the underlying conception of the Roman family when reviewing aspects of Roman ‘family law’.
