This output is a series of 15 oil paintings on copper, which were shown in the Field Notes exhibition at Surgeons Hall Museum, Edinburgh, alongside work by Susie Wilson and a selection of the archive materials, between 10th November 2018 and 30th March 2019.
The Field Notes exhibition was co-curated by Joan Smith and Susie Wilson.
The output came about following two years of research in the archives of Surgeons Hall Museum in Edinburgh. The paintings made by Joan Smith were inspired by two boxes of glass lantern slides which showed images of camp life in the Scottish Women’s Hospitals in Serbia, Macedonia and France during the First World War.
The artworks aimed to bring the archive materials and the story of the Scottish Women’s Hospitals to new audience. The timing of the exhibition was important as it was planned to be part of the First World War commemorations as well as marking the centenary of women’s suffrage. A publication, which includes photographs of the paintings, artworks by Susie Wilson and texts by Maria Fusco and Jacqueline Cahif, accompanies the exhibition.
