Abstract

Lone parents’ entitlements to UK welfare benefits have becomeincreasingly tied to their participation in the labour market inrecent years, most notably via the expanded application of Lone ParentObligations to all families with school-age children and introductionof Universal Credit (UC) requirements affecting those with pre-school children.This briefing presents key findings from a longitudinal study which assessedthe effectiveness and ethical legitimacy of welfare conditionality as it affectslone parents.
