Abstract

This chapter aims to provide an overview of the state-of-the-art on financial industry lobbying, focusing on key debates in the literature. First, we provide an examination of the various lobbying strategies employed by the financial industry and the different factors that inform when these strategies are more or less successful. Next, we delve into the concept of regulatory capture, which refers to the phenomenon in which regulations are written by and in the service of those they are meant to regulate. This section examines the theoretical underpinnings of regulatory capture and explores its various causes. We then explore the role of the transnational financial elite in financial industry lobbying. In doing so, the chapter also assesses the networks and connections that exist among the global financial elite, as well as their potential impact on global financial governance. In the final section, we explore trends in finance and culture. Specifically, we assess how this relates to the deeper interactions between the public and the finance industry. Moreover, we examine how these interactions might impact the power of the financial sector.
