Abstract / Description of output
Experts have restricted access to research published in foreign languages, which leads to key innovations and findings not being adopted in their regions. As a result, the German language literature keeps citing the same, outdated, international sources, and reiterates barriers to research in outdoor and experiential education (OEE) that have long been addressed in other countries. To update the knowledge base German speaking outdoor education experts refer to, this introductory chapter to a compendium of German language research studies in OEE provides an overview on the state-of-the-art and key sources of English language OEE research. A chronological list of meta-studies and their main findings is followed by an analysis of the factors that make OEE so effective/successful as educational intervention. Critical views on research weaknesses in OEE are addressed. The chapter concludes with implications and challenges for research, policy and practice.
