N2 - The concept of therapeutic landscapes explores the interactions between people and their environment, and the impacts that these interactions have on health and wellbeing. However, authors have so far not engaged in-depth discussions of what recovery might mean and how therapeutic landscapes work. In this paper, I draw from the findings of my doctoral study and offer a discussion of the spatiality of recovery for panic disorder sufferers. I argue that, in order to deepen our understanding of how therapeutic landscapes ‘work’ (beyond a temporal palliation of symptoms), we must explore how therapeutic landscapes can yield a deeper transformation for those seeking a therapeutic effect. I do this by exploring the spatiality of panic disorder and the emergence of the home as a temporary safe space in the process of recovery.
