Global atrocity justice constellations: Editors' introduction

Abstract / Description of output

In this brief introduction we explain the origins of the 13 papers in the Global Atrocity Justice Constellations project, and identify some important characteristics of the countries covered. The introduction identifies a diverse set of engagements between states and international criminal justice shaped by historical experience, domestic politics and resources. We find that as a collectiion the papers highlight a complex and dynamic landscape of atrocity justice, where International Criminal Tribunals (ICTs) serve as crucial but not isolated nodes within a broader, interconnected framework of justice delivery. The success of atrocity justice on a global scale, therefore, hinges not just on the strength of ICTs but on the willingness and capacity of states to prosecute international crimes within their own judicial systems.
