Abstract

Only 100 or so of the world’s 7000 languages can boast provision in advanced language technologies. In a recent study by Google, Gaelic and Irish have some of the world’s highest levels of research activity in language technology, relative to their numbers of speakers. This chapter surveys this dynamic research area for Gaelic and Irish, the tools that have been developed, and the public datasets available for training the next generation of machine learning based applications.
