Hand-crafted jewellery design with the integration of interactive optical fiber woven textiles

In the researcher’s previous research, optical fibers can be woven into a piece of fabric, with the integration of a controlling system and light source; the photonic fabric is designed to display different colors. This project involves cross-disciplinary research between hand-crafted Jewelry design and interactive textiles/fibers, with a focus on making-led design investigation. It is a new attempt to combine technology, hand-crafted structures and embellishment within the context of jewelry design, with each aspect working together to place an emphasis on the aesthetic outcomes.
There are several challenges during the experimental works: a) the optical fiber is brittle
b) how can the embellishment and structural methods combine with the optical fiber and other electronics?
c) how to create successful and wearable jewelry pieces without obtrusive components?
d) the aesthetic considerations for both the tangible object and the light output of the optical fibers.

With the cooperation between 2 designers and an engineer, several prototypes were developed.
Prototype 1: Firstly, the optical fibers are woven into a piece of fabric. The photonic fabrics are designed to be further manipulated off-loom and integrated with other textile materials using hand-craft techniques.
Prototype 2: Hand-knotted and braided structures are developed into statement jewelry pieces resulting in stable, complex and visually enticing forms. The integration of optical fibers to perform roles as stranded components of the fine tangible structure as well as their innate function as jewel-like light emitters is explored.
Prototype 3: Sensors and electronics are embedded within the jewelry pieces. The interactive method is realized through a pre-designed program. The wearer is able to interact and impact on its appearance whilst wearing the piece.
