Abstract
This was been a commissioned design brief involving a combination of illustration, printmaking and textile design.
The Herring Moon pattern was devised on a single wood block to form a repeat pattern based upon a lighthouse with its beam of light, waves on the coast, a yacht, the moon, and six fish.
The whole is framed with a diagonal pattern, with alternating moons and fish in patterned sections between the main panel. As a decorative image, it refers to tides and the migration of the herring, their migration from North to South, the sea and phases of the moon.
St Jude's printed three colour ways, 100 metres of each, and the fabric is promoted on their website and sold by mail order. This is a clearly applied piece of design. However, there is an underlying concept, or concepts, and it forms a decorative scheme with a underlying narrative of man's relationship to nature and the elements.
