Abstract

Catalytic heterogeneous hydrogenation is a highly useful method for the reduction of alkenes and alkynes on both academic and industrial scale. This chapter describes the use of various metal catalysts for the reduction of alkenes and alkynes with the aim of providing a practical guide to the synthetic chemist. Regio-, chemo-, and stereoselective hydrogenations are reviewed, along with the asymmetric reduction of alkenes and semihydrogenation of alkynes.
