Abstract

Hirda was composed by Gareth Williams, in collaboration with Chris Stout, a Shetland fiddler and composer, with a libretto written by Sian Evans. The libretto was written in Shetlandic dialect, with help and support from members of the Shetland folk music and story-telling tradition, and premiered on Shetland at the Mareel Arts centre in November 2015, before touring the rest of the Isles, and then mainland Scotland.
Hirda was commissioned and produced by NOISE Opera, and directed by James Robert Carson.
