How Electrochemistry changed my life (and why it could do the same to you)

Abstract / Description of output

Electrochemistry in all its forms has become extremely relevant for society. A few decades ago, though, it was seen by many as the ‘exotic’ part of chemistry, to the extent that very little electrochemistry was taught within undergraduate chemistry degrees (or not at all in chemical engineering courses). This has changed in recent decades with the dramatic consequences of climate change and the ongoing transformation of the energy sector. Nevertheless, electrochemistry is not only energy storage or hydrogen economy, it is far more than that and offers multiple opportunities in a wide range of applications ranging from materials science & engineering to water remediation.

The ’exotic’ nature (for some) of electrochemistry means that, for many of us, it came rather late into our lives (at least in terms of formal academic education). In my case, it did at a time where I was seriously considering to give up my chemical engineering studies due to the lack of motivation and get a more ‘regular’ job. But electrochemistry did not only ‘reconcile’ me with my studies; it lead me to change my career thoughts from “I don’t want to become a chemical engineer no more” to “I want to be an electrochemical engineer!”

In this talk, I will discuss how this happened through several of the aspects that make electrochemistry ‘cool’, discussing different electrochemical applications and how they are intrinsically connected through the pillars of field: electricity and chemical reactions. Hopefully, this will not only show how electrochemistry literally change my life professionally and personally, but how it could also change yours!
