abstract = "This research examines the legacy of the Peace of Constance, the settlement reached between the Lombard League and Emperor Frederick I Barbarossa in 1183, considering the evidence included in the 'books of rights' of the city communes in the course of the 13th century. The libri iurium often contain copies of the text of the Peace of Constance, but references to it can also be found in other documents included in these libri, such as renewals of the oath of association of the Lombard League (in 1185, 1195 and 1208), privileges issued by emperors Frederick I, Henry VI, Otto IV and Frederick II, quarrels between bishops and communes regarding their respective prerogatives, and proceedings of the negotiations belonging to the conflict between the Lombard League and Frederick II fought between 1226 and 1250. They show the central role played by the Peace of Constance in the century after 1183.",
