Abstract / Description of output
This essay contends an interpretation of 'Il giorno della civetta' which is not politically correct. While Sciascia deconstructs the detective novel as a genre by exposing the connections between mafia and politics, the political dimension of gender that underpins the representation of truth is at odds with its final revelation. The film adaptation will be particularly instrumental in showing how Sciascia’s 'civetta' is a poetic image that contrasts the readers’ clichés about Sicily and the mafia with the figure of a woman marked by ambiguity and essentialism.
