Abstract / Description of output

The recent interest in expanding American philosophy into the Americas has often lead to comparative theorizations between Latin America and white American or European philosophical traditions. Black and Africana authors and traditions have often been ignored or altogether erased from the emerging historiographies concerning Americana philosophy. This chapter explores Arthuro Schomburg’s philosophy of history and attempts to decenter the dominant white supremacist myths of civilization at the dawn of the 20th century. This chapter argues that Black theorists and historians developed theories and schools of thought such as the Negro Society for Historical Research to refute the erroneous philosophy of a primitive Africa and savage Blackness
