Abstract / Description of output

In November 2020, a one-week survey was carried out in the Oromia region (south of Addis Ababa), in the vicinity of the Awash and Aqaqi rivers. The aim was to visit rock-hewn sites mentioned in a series of articles published in the 1970s by Richard Pankhurst. Few of the sites explored by the scholar were found. However, new ones were discovered, including a site of particular interest which is located not far from the town of Melka Kunture. After a synopsis of the state of research on rock-hewn sites and their inventory since the mid-19th c., this article presents the main visited sites and discusses the function of these sites and their reuse over time.
