Abstract / Description of output

Connection of Distributed Generation (DG) to distribution networks is increasingly supported by environmental concerns and power market regulations. Nevertheless, technical problems related with protection devices and coordination schemes require special attention since they may weaken the reliability and safety of the system. This paper proposes a methodology to assess the impacts caused by the insertion of DG into a distribution network with a protection scheme not designed for this new scenario, evaluated by means of short circuit analysis and protective devices coordination. In this way, an index will be utilised as an attempt to quantify the protection scheme upgrade required for the distribution network. This index will be integrated into a multiobjective approach aimed at assessing drawbacks and benefits of different DG configurations considered in the analysis.
