title = "Introducing leading works in criminal law",
abstract = "As the title of this collection makes clear, each essay aims to analyse a {\textquoteleft}leading work{\textquoteright} in criminal law. Despite the apparent simplicity of this aim, it raises fundamental questions about what makes something a work of, or on, criminal law and which works should be considered {\textquoteleft}leading{\textquoteright} and why. In this introductory chapter, we share our reflections on these questions and explain how we went about answering them. We also set out some of the main themes of the chapters that follow. Finally, we offer some thoughts on how researchers, students and practitioners might engage with {\textquoteleft}leading{\textquoteright} works, and indeed the category of {\textquoteleft}leading works{\textquoteright} more generally, which are based on our experience of organising and editing this collection.
