Abstract

This introductory chapter begins with an overview of the challenges posed by environmental protection and sustainable development to international law-making. It then considers the impact of the 1992 Rio Declaration of Environment and Development. This is followed discussions of the elements of sustainable development and the legal status of sustainable development.
