Abstract
D. 19,2,31 (Alf. 5 dig. a Paulo epit.) contains a juristic responsum composed in the intermediate rhetorical style. The recognition that the fragment has rhetorical aspects helps toward solving problems of authorship and makes the text intelligible from a legal perspective. The legal and rhetorical quality of the reply provides an insight into the intellectual culture of late Republican Rome.
