Abstract
A revision of my lead article from Studies in Photography (Summer 2022) which focuses on Anselm Kiefer's use of photography as part of his wider practice, an understudied aspect of the artist's oeuvre. This is for the first book publication (exhibition catalogue) on Kiefer's photography, often an incubator of his ideas in other media. The essay focuses on Kiefer's photo-documentation of a notorious performance from 1969, entitled Occupations, and the reutilisation of these photographs throughout his career, especially how they served his idea of history repeating itself. The essay explores contemporary resonances of Kiefer's work at a time of various global conflicts. Translated into French by Gallimard.
