Abstract
Hundreds of rock-cut tomb cemeteries dotting the landscape of Sardinia indicate that the island was densely populated between the Middle Neolithic and the Middle Bronze Age. However, only limited and partial evidence for settlements is available for these periods. The discovery in 2017 of a hilltop settlement site on the plateau of Monte Mannu, near the famous cemetery of Mesu ‘e Montes in Ossi, has brought new information on the spatial and architectural relationships between residential and funerary sites. This article presents the first results of the research carried out at Monte Mannu during the 2019 and 2021 field seasons. Stratigraphic test trenches have confirmed the very long occupation of the site, between the Final Neolithic and the Middle Bronze Age (c. 4000-1500 B.C.), which corresponds to the phases of use of the nearby cemetery. Geophysical survey and excavation have revealed domestic structures, including a rectangular building of a type yet unknown in Sardinia.
