Abstract
Literacy education has a long, significant history and there are a number of concepts and perspectives associated with its development. An aim of this chapter is to review the relevant academic literature associated with varying orientations towards literacy and to highlight the shift that has taken place in our understanding. A further aim seeks to consider the ways in which research has advanced contemporary discussions as it takes into account new social, cultural, linguistic and philosophical paradigms. The chapter concludes by suggesting future lines of inquiry for the field of literacy education as we consider our connection to both local and global contexts.
