Abstract
This essay contextualises Scottish abstract painter Liz Douglas's research and creative output. Its title derives from the title of a series of paintings from 2006. These and other abstract paintings by Douglas respond to an inquiry into the habitat, microscopic make-up and inter-species hybridity of plants in the Scottish borders. They are the result of constant material and intellectual probingby Douglas as well as her collaboration with various scientists.
