Local buying (LB) has been shown in the prior literature to be a commonly adopted sustainability practice in public procurement. This paper investigates whether this is the case for the Higher Education (HE) sector; and if so, to what extent it addresses key sustainability issues. The research takes a nested case study approach – with HE institutions as the focal organisations, and data also collected from customers and suppliers. Key findings to date suggest that there is a need to better understand the concept of LB and hence this paper proposes a taxonomy, based on a local to global buying continuum.
