Abstract

This article is the revised text of an inaugural lecture delivered in the Faculty of Law, University of Edinburgh, on 24 November 1994. The paper examines what it means to live under rules in general, considering first the problem of an individual up against the law, then secondly, and using a computer analogy and metaphor, what it means to place oneself under the governance of rules, and, finally, how love links the first two parts because it fulfils rather than destroys the law.
