Abstract / Description of output
Lowood I is a 'simple' graphic score for solo fiddle. Composed in 2014, the score was workshopped with fiddle player Adam Sutherland (www.adamsutherland.co.uk) on 6th May 2014 and performed to an audience at Tolbooth in Stirling in the Distil Showcase (www.projects.handsupfortrad.scot/distil/about-distil/) on 16th May 2014. The score was published online in 2015 by ISLE Music Scotland.
This piece addresses four main aims: advance the understanding of contemporary traditional music practice (and improvisation as part of that); provide inspiration and experience for creative and skills development to traditional musicians; make something beautiful and provocative that can be creatively performed by readers or non-readers of standard notation; demonstrate the variety of creative and stylistic understanding in traditional fiddle players.
The composition and performance were reviewed by Neil McFadyen on folkradio.co.uk, 16 May 2014. There was also interest in the score from cartographers.
