Abstract

This work was conceived after being invited to exhibit in the Craft in Dialogue exhibition at the Dovecot Studios, Edinburgh. Organised by the Inches Carr Trust, the exhibition was to showcase previous recipients of bursaries.
My research into weaving as an act rather than a product presented a problem given the scale and location of the exhibition. I was against making a 'product' as I anticipated that the exhibition would contain many bespoke crafts in various formats and I have always felt uncomfortable with the fact that Tapestry is expensive/exclusive. On the other hand I have been looking at championing the act of making. A wall drawing seemed to offer an alternative solution to the problem I faced and emerged out of the series of line drawings I had been making for the book Homing.
Making Not Faking was mentioned in the opening essay in the Craft in Dialogue catalogue by Amanda Game, and in the opening speech by the Director of the Dovecot studios, David Weir as an alternative title for the exhibition.
