Abstract

The formation of a [Mn ] 'wheel' or a [Mn ] 'cube' containing idential builiding blocks using trinagular units, H thme and H tmp, directed by the presence of tripodal alcohol self-assemble was analyzed. It was observed that a dramatic change occur in the nature of the product when performing identical reactions with H thme and H tmp. It was shown that despite the major topological difference between the two compounds, a [Mn ] 'wheel' or a [Mn ] 'cube', the building blocks of each are identical. It was found that both he compounds have spin ground states of S ≅, but spin states as large as S = 36 and S = 48 can be stabilized upon application of much stronger fields.
