Abstract

‘Zero hunger’ is a central, if increasingly unattainable, goal of the 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda. A comprehensive understanding of the role of migration in relation to specific aspects of this ambition - access to safe and nutritious food, secure food supply chains, sustainable agricultural production systems and attention to malnutrition - is limited. Drawing upon primary research conducted with Zimbabwean migrants engaged in rural to urban, cross-border, South-to-South and South-to-North migration, in this chapter we argue that this is a critical oversight. We propose three key arenas for research, focusing on: 1) the mutually constitutive nature of migration and food (in)security; 2) a better understanding of food as/and migrant remittances; and 3) the mobility of food practices and cultures and resultant impacts on nutrition.
