A combined modeling and experimental study was conducted to assess the relationship between foldcrack resistance and bending stiffness in coated papers. Models were developed to calculate bending stiffness, predict the onset of failure, and based on this prediction calculate the residual load carrying capacity of coated paper. The model parameters included the number of coating layers, the individual layer thickness, and the mechanical properties of the coating layers in both tension and compression. The experiment was performed on double and triple coated paper on the pilot coater scale and studied the influence of the parameters, including the binder stiffness, the thickness of coating layer, and the coating strength. An outer coating layer with an increased amount of a medium stiff binder clearly improved foldcrack resistance at similar stiffness. It was also seen that the layer thickness in general has a strong influence, with the thicker layer dominating the results.
