Modeling referential coordination as a Particle Swarm Optimization task

Abstract

We take a novel approach to modeling the influence of production cost on referential coordination by employing particle swarm optimization (PSO), a general-purpose optimization method. The PSO-based model replicates behaviors observed in previous research (Rohde et al., 2012; Brennan & Clark, 1996), indicating that referential co- ordination can be framed as a constrained optimization problem in which agents may need only to maintain a simplified repre- sentation of the common ground.
