Abstract
On the outskirts of Edinburgh, in West Lothian in the central belt of Scotland, massive, red-hued structures dominate the landscape. The familiar landmarks indicate the approach to Edinburgh from the motorway that connects the major cities of Glasgow and Edinburgh. These post-industrial oil-shale bings comprise the discarded waste products of the oil refineries that flourished in Scotland’s industrial past and provided employment for the inhabitants of the villages over which they now tower. Numbering nineteen in total, they represent the only remaining oil-shale bings in Western Europe.
