Abstract / Description of output
Music is completely woven into the fabric of our lives. It provides the focus of, or the soundtrack to, countless social situations, and can also provide refuge or solace in private moments. Everyone has a sense of the ways in which they participate in music, and of their own level of ability and interest, and so it forms an important part of identity development and maintenance for many people, especially given that music plays a central role in contemporary society. In the following paragraphs we define the term musical identity and offer some discussion of the key components of this topical area of research.
