Abstract

The Shetland dialect of Scots 1 includes a particle –n [@n], which has only received brief mention in the literature. Robertson & Graham (1952) claim that it is available in ‘interrogatives’. From examples in dialect literature (e.g. (1)), we can see that –n appears in places where standard English would have the negation marker –n’t.
