Abstract / Description of output

This 12 month project funded the Scottish Council of Deans of Education 1+2 Languages sub-group (a group consisting of representatives of each of the schools of Education in Scotland) to develop a National Framework for Languages which will inform initial teacher education and continuing professional development for teachers in Scotland within the context of the Government’s 1+2 languages policy for the teaching of modern languages in primary and secondary school.

The project consisted of the writing of:

(i)the National Framework itself, which identifies key values, practices and reflective questions for colleagues designing initial teacher education programmes or continuing professional development for teachers and student teachers,

(ii)the LENS (Languages Education Network Scotland) tool, a bank of summaries of research papers relating to key aspects of languages education,

(iii) a Languages Education portfolio, which enables teachers to chart their existing strengths and areas for development in relation to teaching modern languages.
