Abstract / Description of output
For generations the Bijagos have organized their religious and working lives around plants in order to feed, clothe, house and keep them healthy.
Rice and Palm trees are the two pillars of the Bijagos society.
This is now threatened by the increase reliance on cashew in order to have access to cash. The consequences are catastrophic: the land gets poorer, the forests with curative plants are being replaced by cashew trees, the knowledge and skills linked to plants is being lost.
